National Influenza Vaccination Week is December 6-12, 2015

The holidays are meant for gathering with family and friends, decorating, and indulging in delicious meals. Don’t let the flu virus keep you stuck in bed. National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is Dec. 6-12, and Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) urges all residents 6 months of age and older to get a yearly flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established NIVW week in 2005 to take a proactive approach to educating the community and health care sector about influenza disease. Take this time and schedule an appointment with your health care provider or your local public health department to get your flu vaccine.

“Flu season can begin as early as August and even last through May,” said Priti Kolhe, CDPH District Immunization Director. “It’s important that residents understand the best way to protect against influenza is to receive an annual flu vaccine. As long as the virus is circulating, it’s never too late to vaccinate.”

Influenza can be a serious disease that leads to hospitalization and sometimes death. Regardless of race, age, gender or ethnicity, anyone can get sick from the flu. Those especially at risk are adults 65 years of age and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or other long-term medical conditions.

National Influenza Vaccination Week emphasizes the importance of receiving an annual flu vaccination. Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from the flu. So this winter, Cobb & Douglas Public Health encourages residents to visit the Marietta, East Cobb, Acworth or Douglas Public Health Centers to receive their flu vaccine, no appointment necessary.

Kaiser Permanente Supports Healthy Pregnancies with Generous Donation

Cobb & Douglas Public Health received a $75,000 donation from Kaiser Permanente of Georgia to support critical maternal health services for local women in need. The funds will help support the Perinatal Case Management (PCM) and Babies Born Healthy (BBH) programs that directly affect pregnant women, nursing mothers and their children during the first stages of life.

Kaiser Permanente was the first corporate donor to support crucial health services that public health provides to under-served pregnant women and their children locally. Aiding women in need with early prenatal care helps reduce infant mortality and ensure both mother and child experience a healthy pregnancy and birth.

“We are very excited to be part of this partnership,” says Madelyn R. Adams, director of community benefit for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “These funds help women receive early prenatal care, which increases the chance of healthy births—preferably in the maternity unit and not the ER.”

Donations from this grant go directly to support services of the PCM Program, which helps connect expecting mothers to resources and needed services to begin their prenatal care. The overarching goals of the program are to reduce preterm labor and the incidence of low birth weight babies.

Funds from Kaiser Permanente also allow Cobb & Douglas Public Health to enroll more women in the BBH program. This program protects the health and safety of under- or uninsured moms and babies in Cobb and Douglas counties through reduced-cost services and payor of last resort funds for very low income women with partnerships through participating OB/GYN clinics and others.

For more information about either of these programs, please visit www.cobbanddouglaspublichealth.org, or call 770-514-2300.

In recognition of National Safe Toys and Gifts Month, Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) urges residents to consider purchasing safer toys for children during the holidays, and offers these safety tips:

  • Avoid toys with small parts or many pieces for children younger than 5 years of age
  • Always check with parents of children first before deciding on a toy for the child
  • Read all warnings and instructions on the box, as well as suggested age suitability
  • Avoid toys that shoot or have parts that fly off
  • Do not purchase toys with long strings or cords
  • Make sure purchased toys can withstand impact and will not break into small shards
  • Avoid toys with sharp edges, spikes, protrusions or rigid points
  • Look for the letters “ASTM” on toy packaging which indicates that the product meets American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) safety standards
  • Consider if there are younger children in the house before buying a toy that shoots, fires, has many small pieces, requires assembly or can be ridden for an older child
  • Always clean up balloons as soon as they break or deflate to avoid choking hazards
  • Make sure sports equipment has accompanying protective gear, especially gear protecting the head and face
  • Help children learn how to safety use their toys and monitor children when they play

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2014 there were an estimated 251,800 toy-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency

departments. Of the 251,800 estimated toy-related, emergency department-treated injuries, an estimated 183,800 (73 percent) happened to children younger than 15 years of age.
