Women in Cobb and Douglas Counties Can Prevent Cervical Cancer through Screening

The first month of the New Year marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) advises women to make Pap tests and screenings part of their New Year’s resolutions.

Cervical cancer – one of five main types of cancers than can affect the reproductive organs of women – is highly preventable, and is almost always caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The Pap smear and the HPV test are both used to either screen or detect cancerous cells in a woman’s cervix.

According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report in 2012, nearly 8 million U.S. women ages 21 – 65 indicated that they had gone five years without a Pap test, but more than 93 percent of cervical cancers could be prevented by screening and HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccinations. These missed opportunities for early detection and prevention are causing over 4,000 deaths from cervical cancer each year. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reported that in 2014 an estimated 12,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed nationwide, resulting in 4,020 deaths.

However, the rates of cervical cancer have been steadily declining because more women have been getting their doctor-recommended screenings. Most women ages 21 and older should have a Pap test every three years if their first test is normal. Women over the age of 30 may choose to combine the HPV test with their regular Pap screenings, as cervical cancer most commonly occurs in women 30 years of age and older.

In addition, there is a vaccine to prevent the spread of HPV that is recommended to boys and girls ages 11 and 12, but can be completed up until the age of 26.

“This cancer is so preventable, we really urge women to make Pap tests and screenings part of their routine doctor’s visits. Eligible low income women in Cobb and Douglas counties can visit CDPH to see if they qualify for low or no-cost Pap tests through the BreasTest & More program, so there are always options open to our residents,” said Dawn Krahwinkel, CDPH Women’s Health Coordinator and STI Program Director.

Buckle Up Right, Every Trip, Every Time

Safe Kids Cobb County (led by both Cobb & Douglas Public Health and WellStar Health System) was awarded the 2016 Car Seat Mini-Grant by the Georgia Department of Public Health, Injury Prevention Program. Through the Mini-Grant, Safe Kids Cobb County and Cobb County Fire & EMS work together to provide car seats and education to financially eligible families in their community.  This program is funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to help ensure Georgia’s children are safe while riding in motor vehicles.

And it works! Since 2007, the education, car seats and booster seats provided through the Mini Grant prevented serious injury or death and saved at least 303 of Georgia’s children who were involved in crashes.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats reduce fatal injuries by 71 percent among infants and by 54 percent among children ages 1 to 4 years in passenger cars.  Car seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash, and they are most effective when installed and used correctly.  Nearly three out of every four car seats are not used properly, placing children at unnecessary risk.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our children safe,” said Viva Price, Co-Coordinator, Safe Kids Cobb County.  “The Car Seat Mini-Grant is a great opportunity to help our community and help protect our kids from serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes.”

In Cobb County, Safe Kids Cobb County and Cobb County Fire & EMS educate parents and caregivers on how to properly install and use car seats, offer car seat inspections and provide car seats and booster seats to financially eligible families.  Through the Car Seat Mini-Grant, agencies supporting more than 130 counties are working to keep Georgia’s children safe.  These programs help families get their children buckled up right, every trip, every time.

For more information about the Safe Kids Cobb County car seat program, contact Viva Price at 770-514-2369 or www.safekidscobbcounty.org. If you would like information regarding other counties involved in the program, please contact the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Child Occupant Safety Project via email at injury@dph.ga.gov or at (404) 679-0500.

Shatter the Myths of Tobacco Abuse during National Drug Facts Week with Cobb & Douglas Public Health

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week is January 25 – February 1, 2016 and Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) wants to help residents ‘Shatter the Myths’ of tobacco abuse in Cobb and Douglas counties. In observation of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, CDPH is debunking the myth around secondhand smoke.

No amount of secondhand smoke is safe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has connected the deaths of more than 400 infants and 41,000 adult nonsmokers every year to secondhand smoke nationwide. And those deaths are entirely preventable.

Smoking Myths Shattered:

Myth: Marijuana isn’t addictive.
Fact: According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 1 in 11 people who use Marijuana become addicted.

Myth: Smoking when you’re young doesn’t mean you’ll become addicted.
Fact: Most people who start smoking in their teens become regular smokers before they are 18.

Myth: Smokeless tobacco does not cause cancer.
Fact: Smokeless tobacco increases the risk of cancer, especially oral cancers.

The best and only way to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke is to eliminate smoking in all homes, worksites and public places, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. With the help of community leaders and involved residents, the CDPH Cobb2020 Breathe Easy Cobb initiative is working towards alleviating the issue of secondhand smoke.

“By providing support for organizations and municipalities to adopt tobacco-free/smoke-free policies, Breathe Easy Cobb is strengthening local tobacco-free regulation and lessening the occurrence of secondhand smoke, and working towards their vision of all public places and work places in Cobb County becoming tobacco-free,” said Wende Parker, Director of Chronic Disease and Prevention at Cobb & Douglas Public Health.

The adoption of local tobacco-free/smoke-free polices has been widely accepted. The Georgia Department of Public Health 2015 Georgia Tobacco Use Surveillance Report found 71% of adult smokers and 84% of adult non-smokers support laws making indoor areas smoke-free.

This response may have come as a result of the positive aftermath of the Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005 which prohibits smoking inside most public areas and provides guidelines for allowing smoking in and around establishments that serve the public. If you or someone you know needs help with tobacco abuse, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), a national toll-free number that can help people get the information they need to quit smoking.

For more information about secondhand smoke and Breathe Easy Cobb visit cobb2020.com/cobb2020-programs/breathe-easy-cobb or call 770-514-2300.
