More than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection, and almost 1 in 8 of those individuals do not know they have the disease. The Georgia Department of Public Health’s (DPH) 2013 HIV Disease Surveillance Survey indicated Georgia as the fifth leading state in the nation for new rates of HIV infection, and as part of Metro Atlanta, Cobb and Douglas counties contribute to these high rates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men accounted for 80 percent of all new HIV infections in Georgia alone during 2013, and the rates of infection disproportionately affected African-American/Non-Hispanic males. African-Americans made up 66 percent of those living with the virus in the state, yet they comprise only 31 percent of Georgia’s overall population. Nationwide, roughly one out of every two individuals living with HIV were African-American in 2013.

“Georgia, and in particular the Metro Atlanta area, is greatly affected by HIV infection, and unfortunately the disease impacts men and African-Americans more than anyone else – including in Cobb and Douglas counties,” said Rachel Franklin, Director of Epidemiology at CDPH. “Prevention through testing, counseling and safer sex education is of course the goal of public health, but what a lot of patients affected by the virus don’t realize is that there is hope after infection.”

Viral suppression, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure (PEP) drugs – when taken regularly – help to reduce the risk of transmission, and ensure that those affected by HIV live longer, healthier lives.

“But to take that step, you have to get tested and know your status,” she said.

Cobb & Douglas Public Health’s testing, counseling and outreach efforts surrounding HIV includes educational materials such as pamphlets, safe sex items like condoms available at no charge to the public and knowledgeable, compassionate counselors that can help guide residents through next step options, or discuss risk-reduction techniques.

Testing during the World AIDS Day events is free and open to everyone. There are no needles involved and results are confidential and ready within 20 minutes.

Volunteer Options for Vets

by Staff | Cobb InFocus Magazine |

The Cobb & Douglas Medical Reserve Corps is open to anyone who wants to volunteer, especially veterans. “There is a need for their expertise, whether it be as medical volunteers, communications, logistics, transportation, etc.,” says Leticia Mathis, deputy director of the Center for Emergency Preparedness & Response and CDMRC director. “All skills are welcome.”

Cobb & Douglas Public Health is the housing entity for the CDMRC, meaning that all grant monies come through the health department to fund it, and its volunteers must adhere to all policies of security and confidentiality as demonstrated through their signature. “Members of the CDMRC are trained to respond during a public health emergency. The health department relies on volunteers to be able to support it in pushing out life-saving medications, vaccines and information during a crisis,” Mathis says. “These volunteers also assist during events such as flu clinics, back-to-school season, HIV clinics and other areas where support is needed to help the community.”

There are about 100 Cobb residents volunteering with CDMRC. Learn more by visiting cobbanddouglaspublichealth.org and clicking “Emergency Preparedness,” checking out medicalreservecorps.gov, signing up through Georgia Responds located at servga.gov by clicking the “Register Now” button at the bottom of the page, emailing the CDMRC coordinator, Jenaila Hawkins at jenaila.hawkins@dph.ga.gov or calling (770) 514-2331.

In addition, Cobb & Douglas Public Health offers an International Travel Health Clinic that may be helpful to service members. “Veterans, like many retired individuals, enjoy traveling abroad and visiting new places around the world. The International Travel Health Clinic provides important vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis and education to stay well while traveling and also provides tips for safe traveling,” says Priti Kolhe, district immunization director for Cobb & Douglas Public Health. Traveling internationally can expose travelers to diseases that are not common in the U.S., and the clinic provides vaccinations against several diseases that travelers ‘may be exposed to when traveling. “Clients also receive a consultation with a nurse to discuss health risks specific to the area of travel.

Education on reducing health risks from food, water, animals, insects and general travel precautions are also discussed during the consultation,” Kolhe continues. “We are connected to the World Health Organization and get daily updates so that travelers are fully aware of any health and safety issues in the country they are visiting.”

In 2014, the International Travel Health Clinics in Marietta and east Cobb provided 1,510 travel consultations. Residents may call (770) 514-2485 to make an appointment, or visit cobbanddouglaspublichealth.org and click on “Travel Health Services.”

Cobb & Douglas Public Health Urges Residents to Follow These Food Safety Tips When Preparing a Turkey for the Holidays

Thanksgiving Day is right around the corner and marks the start of the holiday season.  If you are planning to prepare a holiday meal, Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) says the first thing on your planning list should be food safety.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases.

If a turkey is going to be a part of your holiday meal, CDPH recommends following these guidelines from the CDC to avoid the chance of becoming ill:

Safe Thawing

Thawing turkeys must be kept at a safe temperature. The “danger zone” is between 40 and 140°F — the temperature range where foodborne bacteria multiply rapidly. While frozen, a turkey is safe indefinitely, but as soon as it begins to thaw, bacteria that may have been present before freezing can begin to grow again, if it is in the “danger zone.”

There are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in a microwave oven. For detailed instructions, visit: www.fsis.usda.gov

Safe Preparation

Bacteria present on raw poultry can contaminate your hands, utensils, and work surfaces as you prepare the turkey. If these areas are not cleaned thoroughly before working with other foods, bacteria from the raw poultry can then be transferred to other foods. After working with raw poultry, always wash your hands, utensils, and work surfaces before they touch other foods.

Safe Stuffing

For optimal safety and uniform doneness, cook the stuffing outside the turkey in a casserole dish. However, if you place stuffing inside the turkey, do so just before cooking, and use a food thermometer. Make sure the center of the stuffing reaches a safe minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Bacteria can survive in stuffing that has not reached 165°F, possibly resulting in foodborne illness.

Safe Cooking

Set the oven temperature no lower than 325°F and be sure the turkey is completely thawed. Place turkey breast-side up on a flat wire rack in a shallow roasting pan 2 to 2-1/2 inches deep. Check the internal temperature at the center of the stuffing and meaty portion of the breast, thigh, and wing joint using a food thermometer. Cooking times will vary. The food thermometer must reach a safe minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Let the turkey stand 20 minutes before removing all stuffing from the cavity and carving the meat. For more information on safe internal temperatures, visit www.foodsafety.gov.

Cobb & Douglas Public Health Offers Tips for Winter Weather Preparedness Week

Governor Nathan Deal proclaimed the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4 as Winter Weather Preparedness Week. During this week, Georgians are encouraged to prepare for winter weather by replenishing necessary supplies, making a plan and learning about the different types of winter weather.

“All Georgians are encouraged to prepare and plan for dangerous weather conditions by winterizing their homes, making a family communications plan and preparing an emergency kit for their homes and cars,” said Deal. “Departments and agencies of the local, state and federal government, in partnership with the private sector and other organizations, are working to prevent and respond to winter weather emergencies, and I urge all citizens to educate themselves and others about the dangers of severe weather.”

To help prepare residents for any emergency that might take hold this winter, the Cobb & Douglas Public Health Emergency Preparedness & Response team offers several tips:

  1. Create a “Vehicle Go-Kit” of essentials like three days of non-perishable food items, a gallon of water per day per individual, a supply of necessary medications for each family member and blankets, extra cell phone battery/charger, jumper cables, ice scraper and sand for tire traction.
  2. Prepare a “Ready Kit” of emergency supplies for your home. Include at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food, water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a NOAA Weather Radio, adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm, as well as additional supplies for the unique needs of your family, such as medication or pet needs.
  3. Create an emergency communications plan so family members will know who to contact if separated during a storm. Designate at least one out-of-town contact who all family members can call. Determine a way to let family and friends know you’re OK if the power goes out. Create a customized plan for your family using the Ready Georgia website or mobile app.
  4. Identify an alternate heat source, like a fireplace or wood-burning stove, and stock sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  5. Winterize your vehicle and keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent your fuel line from freezing.
  6. Winterize your home by placing weather stripping around doors and windows. During cold weather, allow faucets to drip, and open cabinet doors to let heat reach uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
  7. Stay informed about winter weather! Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio or other battery-operated radio to monitor changing winter weather conditions.
  8. Download the Ready Georgia mobile app, which includes geo-targeted severe weather and emergency alerts that will notify your phone before disasters strike.

In addition to these tips, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security’s Ready Georgia campaign urges residents to learn about different ways to prepare throughout the week:

  • Monday, Nov 30: Winter Weather in Georgia – Examine different types of winter weather that affect Georgia.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 1: Winter Weather Terminology – Brush up on winter weather alerts and what they mean.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 2: Preparing for a Winter Storm – Learn how to prepare a Ready Kit and make a plan for winter weather.
  • Thursday, Dec. 3: What to Do During a Winter Storm – Focus on best practices to follow during a winter storm, including tips for driving in winter conditions and what to do if caught outside during a storm.
  • Friday, Dec. 4: Winter Weather Outlook – Take a look at what’s expected this winter.

Make a Date to Vaccinate with Cobb & Douglas Public Health During National Influenza Vaccination Week

National Influenza Vaccination Week is December 6-12, 2015

The holidays are meant for gathering with family and friends, decorating, and indulging in delicious meals. Don’t let the flu virus keep you stuck in bed. National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is Dec. 6-12, and Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) urges all residents 6 months of age and older to get a yearly flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established NIVW week in 2005 to take a proactive approach to educating the community and health care sector about influenza disease. Take this time and schedule an appointment with your health care provider or your local public health department to get your flu vaccine.

“Flu season can begin as early as August and even last through May,” said Priti Kolhe, CDPH District Immunization Director. “It’s important that residents understand the best way to protect against influenza is to receive an annual flu vaccine. As long as the virus is circulating, it’s never too late to vaccinate.”

Influenza can be a serious disease that leads to hospitalization and sometimes death. Regardless of race, age, gender or ethnicity, anyone can get sick from the flu. Those especially at risk are adults 65 years of age and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or other long-term medical conditions.

National Influenza Vaccination Week emphasizes the importance of receiving an annual flu vaccination. Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from the flu. So this winter, Cobb & Douglas Public Health encourages residents to visit the Marietta, East Cobb, Acworth or Douglas Public Health Centers to receive their flu vaccine, no appointment necessary.
