Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH), in partnership with the Live Healthy Douglas Coalition (LHD), Douglas County School System (DCSS) and other community partners, hosted the 24th annual Power in Truth (PIT) conference on Tuesday, October 22 for the prevention of bullying and youth substance abuse.
Lorenza Pharrams of LJP Educational Consulting, addressed the crowd of Douglas County students, urging them to remember that they are empowered to make good choices in their lives and to have a bright and successful future.
“Smart decisions today lead to success and happiness tomorrow,” Pharrams said.
Other speakers included members of The Power of Peace Project (POPP). President Kit Cummings and his team spoke about how they were able to overcome obstacles in their lives and they encouraged the students to make a difference.
“Figure out what your unique gift is, and then give it to the world,” Cummings said to the crowd.
The conference was held at the Legacy Arena and featured several local youth organizations and colleges. Additional community partners were present, leading activities designed to encourage Douglas County Middle and High School students to make positive choices. Students were selected by the school system to attend the free event which counted as a field trip.
About Power in Truth (PIT)
PIT is a youth focused educational and behavioral focused program which has been implemented since 2000. PIT empowers hundreds to thousands of youths each year to make healthy choices and avoid high-risk behaviors. Prevention is the primary focus with an emphasis on equipping youth to resist media manipulation and social pressure. For twenty-three years, PIT has addressed crucial issues affecting our youth. This year’s conference will include a focus on drugs and alcohol, tobacco and vaping, bullying, healthy relationships, and mental health. The conference offers information and resources that support both students’ leadership skills and abilities to make positive, informed decisions. For school advisors and advocates, PIT highlights current issues youth face and resources to use as intervention strategies.
