On Tuesday, September 25, Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) will host Cupcakes & Conversations, an event which includes free HIV testing and counseling at the Marietta Public Health Center from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Cupcakes will also be served.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1.1 million people in the United States were living with HIV at the end of 2015, the most recent year this information was available. Of those people, about 1 put of 7 people do not know they are infected. Three of four infected individuals living with HIV are men, and African-American men have the highest rates of new infection among all men. In total, men accounted for 80 percent of all new HIV infections.
“We continue to provide testing, counseling and awareness events focused on HIV prevention so that we can reach those most in need of our services and link them with the care they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives in Cobb and Douglas counties,” said Karrie Pate, HIV Prevention Program Manager at Cobb & Douglas Public Health. “It’s critical to understand who is most affected by diseases and infections, but everyone is welcome to get tested, know their status and receive the support and understanding of how they can live happy, healthy lives – even if they’re experiencing a health challenge like HIV.”
This free event is open to everyone. This event is in honor of National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. All testing results are confidential and are available in 60 seconds.
The Marietta Public Health Center is located at 1650 County Services Parkway in Marietta. For more information, please call 770-514-2432.
