Since 1920, Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) has been dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and safety of the residents of Douglas County.

The Douglas Public Health Center offers more than 20 distinct public health programs. These services range from providing health education and services to residents to investigating and stopping the spread of foodborne illnesses that can protect the entire population.

Over the years, services at CDPH have increased and improved. In 2015, Cobb & Douglas Public Health completed an ambitious renovation of the Douglas Public Health Center to provide updated facilities, increased client capacity and expanded acceptance of most major insurance plans to help residents achieve greater access to healthcare.

One of the Douglas Public Health Center’s most sought-after services is the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition program. WIC staff help income-eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children under the age of 5, better understand and meet their nutritional needs. From nutrition assessments to education and counseling for breastfeeding moms, the Douglas WIC program makes sure that women and children get the support they need to eat healthy and receive access to essential health services.

For those planning to take a trip overseas, the Douglas Travel Health Services Clinic can help. The Travel Health Clinic offers a private consultation to help clients avoid health and safety risks during international travel. At the end of the consultation, clients receive a customized packet outlining vaccination recommendations tailored to their health history and travel plans.

The Douglas Adult Health Clinic provides testing, education and surveillance of sexually transmitted diseases/infections (STD /STI). Team members help clients with risk reduction education, testing, treatment, partner notification and the provision of medical and social referrals as appropriate.

Adult women who meet certain criteria can receive services for breast exams, pap tests and pelvic exams with little or no cost through the BreasTEST & More Program at the Douglas Public Health Center. Free mammogram referrals are also provided.

Child health remains a top priority at the Douglas Public Health Center. The Immunizations Clinic provides infants, children and adolescents with hearing, vision, and dental screenings and vaccinations needed for school. Adult Immunizations are also provided, as well as immunizations and titers needed for college admission requirements. For residents over 65 years old, vaccines for Pneumonia and Shingles are offered. Flu Shots are available to everyone six months or older.

The Douglas Public Health Center also promotes the Safe Kids Douglas Coalition, which provides car-seat checkups, safety workshops and clinics that help parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries. To complement its offering of health services, the Douglas Public Health Center also focuses on helping communities, businesses and residents adopt healthy lifestyles. The staff at the Douglas Public Health Center and partner coalitions such as Live Healthy Douglas, help provide community assessments, policy development and education related to balanced nutrition, physical activity and family health preventative care.

Other services offered in Douglas County include: Perinatal Case Management, Children’s Medical Services, Children 1st, Babies Can’t Wait, the Tuberculosis Program, Environmental Health, Infectious Disease Surveillance and Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention.
