As part of its 2014 annual conference, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), last week honored the outstanding efforts and accomplishments of North Georgia’s Cobb and Douglas Public Health District. Recognizing the district’s work in “exemplary and replicable qualities in response to a critical local public health need,” NACCHO awarded the district with one of 22 Model Practice Awards.

“We are proud to receive NACCHO’s Model Practice Award.  The award is evidence of our commitment to developing responsive and innovative public health programs and tools that improve the health of local residents,” said Jack Kennedy, M.D., district health director for Cobb and Douglas Public Health.

The district’s Program Summary Tool: An Evaluation Framework for Public Health Program Success provides Public Health workers rapid access to information for marketing, grant proposals, and education regarding the type and scope of public health programs.

One of 71 applicants, the Cobb and Douglas Public Health District demonstrated innovative ways to improve the health and safety outcomes of the communities they serve, according to NACCHO.

“From the water we drink to the food we eat and air we breathe, local health department leadership is on the front lines of health and safety in our communities. That work should not go unnoticed”, said NACCHO Executive Director Robert M. Pestronk.

“With our awards, we recognize local governmental public health work that prevents bad things from happening and prepares us to respond when they do. We celebrate evidence of passion, ingenuity, and best practice. These create healthier neighborhoods one block at a time.”

NACCHO represents the nation’s 2,800 local governmental health departments. To view all of this year’s national awards, including the Local Health Department of the Year Awards, see the NACCHO article at naccho.org.
