The Cobb & Douglas Public Health will have two free HIV testing events at the Marietta and Douglasville Public Health centers in recognition of national HIV/AIDS Testing Day, which is June 27.
The Douglas Public Health Center, 6770 Selman Drive in Douglasville, will have testing on June 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Marietta Public Health Center, Building B, Classroom B, 1738 County Services Parkway in Marietta, will have testing on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV and nearly 1 in 8 don’t know they are infected. Georgia is ranked fifth in the nation for amount of persons living with HIV and two-thirds or 66 percent live in the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
“Finding out your status can be a life-changing experience,” said Rachel Franklin, director of Epidemiology at Cobb & Douglas Public Health. “It can be scary at first, but knowing your status — especially if it’s positive — can help you get access to care, live healthier and, of course, learn how to prevent HIV transmission.”
The events are open to everyone. No appointments are necessary. All testing results are confidential, available in 20 minutes and no needles are used.
For more information, call 770-514-2815 or 770-514-2432.
