County manager honored for leadership

Cobb County Manager David Hankerson (pictured on right) was recently honored with the 2014 Jerry R. Griffin Excellence in Public Service Award by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia. This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has worked toward achieving a lasting positive impact on his or her community.

“His county government track record is extensive with numerous contributions and achievements that include the implementation of priority-based budgeting system, operating a county budget with seven Triple A rankings, the completion of the East-West Connector, and most recently, the relocation of the Atlanta Braves stadium to Cobb County,” ACCG officials said in a statement.

Hankerson has more than 30 years of local government experience, serving as county manager since 1993.

County offices closed Friday

All Cobb County Government offices will be closed Friday, April 18, in observance of Good Friday.

Cobb’s largest egg hunt upcoming at Jim Miller Park

Cobb County’s largest egg hunt will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 19, at Jim Miller Park in Marietta. The 2014 Hunt will feature children’s art activities, live entertainment, inflatables and concessions. The Easter Bunny will be on hand and there will be contests, including the Mad Hatter Contest and Decorated Basket Contest. 

There will be five egg hunts which will be broken down into age groups. In each hunt, there will be special prize eggs. Schedule of events:

10 a.m. – Park opens
10:30 a.m. – 3 years and younger hunt
11 a.m. – 4 and 5 years hunt
11:30 a.m. – Special population’s hunt

Noon – 6 and 7 years hunt
12:30 p.m. – 8-10 years hunt
1 p.m. – Mad Hatter’s Contest / Easter Basket Contest
2 p.m. – Park closes

Watershed program earns honors

Cobb County Watershed Stewardship program was recently honored with the 2013 Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Watershed Award. The Cobb program’s mission is to promote respect for the environment by teaching the connection between our behavior and water quality. During the 2012-2013 reporting year, 10,761 Cobb residents participated in programs provided by the Watershed Stewardship Program. Specifically for the Adopt-A-Stream program, staff trained 244 volunteers during 45 chemical, bacterial and macroinvertebrate monitoring workshops.

In Cobb, there are more than 50 active monitoring groups who reported more than 500 monitoring events in 2013. The Watershed Stewardship Program brings water quality awareness to the community through rain barrel workshops and storm drain marking, partnering with library departments and the Cobb County Master Gardeners and organizing Cobb’s Anuran Monitoring program and the Children’s Water Festival.

Cobb’s environmental programs specialist, Mike Kahle, was recognized as the New Trainer of the Year. He has conducted 55 workshops, certifying 471 volunteers and was praised for going above and beyond to educate and motivate volunteers.

Ina Allison was also honored with the 2013 Excellence in Data Collection award. She has been a chemical and macroinvertebrate monitoring volunteer for 10 years. She was praised for the highest quality collection methods and environmental stewardship efforts.

Proposed changes to CCT routes 20 and 30

Cobb Community Transit staff will host public hearings on April 16 and 17 to inform CCT patrons and the public of proposed service modifications to Route 20 and Route 30. There will be no formal presentation. Public hearings:

  • Wednesday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the South Cobb Government Center, 4700 Austell Road, Austell.  Ride CCT Route 30 to get to this location.
  • Thursday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the CCT Paratransit Facility, 431 Commerce Park Drive, Marietta. One block south of Marietta Transfer Center.

Copies of the proposed service modifications are also available at CCT Customer Service, 431 Commerce Park Drive, Marietta, during business hours 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Still time to register for free Aging by Design Summit

Registration is still open for the Aging by Design Summit 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, April 28, at the Cobb Galleria Centre. This free seminar will share important information on issues that impact older adults. Space is limited and the registration deadline is Monday, April 21. To register, click here.

Affordable home ownership through Habitat for Humanity

NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity offers low-to-moderate income families and individuals the opportunity to achieve the dream of owning their own homes. By building and renovating three and four bedroom homes, and financing them back at no interest and no profit, Habitat homeowners are able to realize significant monthly savings, pride of ownership and a greater sense of security and stability. The monthly mortgage payment on a new Habitat home rages $525-$545, including taxes and insurance. Voter registration deadline approaching; sample ballot available

The deadline to register to vote in the May 20 general primary and special elections, as well as associated runoffs, is April 21. To be qualified to register, you must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Cobb County and must be at least 17-and-a-half years old (but you cannot vote until you turn 18).

Any mail-in applications must be postmarked by 30 days prior to that election. If you move, you must notify the Board of Elections and Registration 30 days prior to any election. Join the family fun at free block party

Residents are invited to enjoy fun, food and music with friends and neighbors at the free Public Safety Education Block Party. It will be held 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, April 26, at the entrance to Parkview Apartments, 360 Six Flags Drive, Austell.

Join local fire and police departments, 911, Community Emergency Response Team, Austell Community Task Force, Animal Control and the Neighborhood Safety Commission.
